3 Lessons I’ve Learned About Remodeling a Home

We are knee deep in our home remodel. Tile is up on the walls, the tub will go in soon, our old flooring still needs to be replaced and kitchen hasn’t started just yet.

We planned on having the remodel completed prior to the holidays, but construction always takes longer then anyone thinks. All that to say we are learning to make the best out of it all and we keep reminding ourselves that when all this is done, it will be worth the weeks spent living in a construction zone.

Lesson #1: Be Clear With Expectations and Watch Closely

I have learned that throughout this process that it’s very important to be very clear about my wants and needs. All of the details need to be watched over - from making sure tile is straight and without cracks to making sure holes are matched well. I want to love my space. I want all of my decisions to represent my heart and vision for that space.

Lesson #2: Go With Your Instincts: Make Your Decisions and Don’t Second-Guess

I am still slightly nervous about my design choices, and if you are in the thick of a renovation, you may feel this, too. It can be so difficult to make choices without seeing everything put together, but I have to believe I chose best and trust my instincts (especially because we can’t change anything now.)

Lesson #3: This Is The Perfect Time to Minimize

Sitting in piles of “stuff”, cluttered around the construction piles, has given me the opportunity to minimize and that has been really nice. I like knowing that when I go to put everything in it’s place it will be just what we wanted to keep. I encourage you to do your best to minimize your home when under construction!
